Work in Dr. Stephen P. Oliver's lab (Dept. Animal Science, Prof. & Co-Director of UTFSCE)
  
Interact with Dr. F. Anne Draughon (Dept. Food Science & Technology, Prof. & Co-Director of UTFSCE) Dr. Raul Almeida
 
   
Provide team leadership for Food Safety Research Group in Dr. Stephen .P. Oliver's lab
 
   
Coordinate on-farm pathogen reduction program/ on-farm food safety
 
   
Detect and confirm foodborne pathogens (Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli, Salmonella, Listeria monocytogenes and Campylobacter)
 
   
Monitor coliform contamination (quantitative) in milking parlors to aid with hygienic milk production.
 
   
Assess FDA/Bacteriological Analytical Manual methods for ability to isolate and confirm food pathogens.
 
   
Evaluate DNA-based techniques (PCR, PFGE) for use in pathogen and virulence factor characterization.
 
   
Write and review research proposals for competitive funding initiatives.
 
   
Compile laboratory manuals for microbiological media preparation and analytical protocols/SOPs.
 
   
Prepare summary progress reports for principal investigator and analytical reports for dairy farmers.
 
   
Analyze and interpret research data and write manuscripts for publication.
 
   
Write abstracts for professional meetings and prepare posters for presentation at annual symposiums.
 
   
Supervise student research projects e.g., MacNair Scholar for pre-graduate school research appreciation program (Summer 2002).
