What are my chances for obtaining a graduate
assistantship or other financial aid?
The Department offers graduate assistantships on
a limited basis. Our current research and teaching assistantships
carry a minimum annual stipend of $12,500 for M.S. and $15,500 for
PhD students. In addition to the stipend, out-of-state and in-state
tuition is waived. You can find current figures for fees and tuition
at the UT Bursar's website.
The number of department-supported stipends is limited and thus
such support is offered on a highly competitive basis. Previous
undergraduate and/or graduate grade point average, GRE scores, rating
forms/letters of reference, and other measures of past performance
are used to identify those students most qualified for assistantships.
In addition to the above, individual faculty members may also support
graduate students through extramural grants. Such support may also
be distributed on a competitive basis, and students supported in
this way may be obligated to work on specific projects or in specific
research areas, as determined by the funding source. For information
regarding availability of grant-based stipends, you will need to
contact faculty members with programs in your area of interest.
