Classrooms,
faculty offices, and research laboratories are located in McCord
Hall and Brehm Hall. These facilities include 16 core laboratories
containing
a full complement of essential equipment in support of microscopy,analytical
and preparative chromatography, spectrophotometry, cell culture,
bacteriology,radioisotope handling and counting, centrifugation
and molecular biology. A large capacity indoor arena and associated
animal holding and handling areas are located in BrehmHall and used
extensively for teaching and outreach activities.
The
Johnson Animal Research and Teaching Unit includes 16 rooms for
whole animal research under controlled environments, metabolism
studies, and intensive disease, nutrition, physiology, behavior
and management research. Supporting facilities include a large animal
surgery unit, tissue collection and preparation laboratory, general
procedures laboratory, cell culture and embryo micro-manipulation
laboratory, necropsy laboratory, and a feed mill capable of mixing
premixes and complete feeds for dairy, beef, poultry, and swine.
Field
instruction and research are conducted at 11 branch experiment
stations located across the state. These include 5 beef herds
with a total inventory of more than 1000 cows, 3 dairies with a
total inventory of more than 500 cows, 3 farrow-to-finish swine
units, a poultry unit, and a small sheep unit. The College of Veterinary
Medicine's Cherokee Unit is available to support instructional activities
with horses.
