Graduate Program: Admission Requirements

For consideration of admission to the Animal Science Graduate Program, a student must have obtained a 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale in a completed undergraduate degree program, preferably in animal science or a related area.  Applicants with previous graduate work must have earned a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, or equivalent, on all graduate work. Applicants with work experience or who are entering graduate study after a number of years away from an educational institution will be given consideration with greater flexibility relative to GPA.

Admission to the Animal Science Graduate Program will be contingent upon faculty evaluation of the applicant’s undergraduate and/or graduate grade point average, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, information contained within rating forms and that possibly provided by others, educational and career goals, relevant work experience, and scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), if applicable.  Prerequisite courses may be required if the student has insufficient background. If the student has an unsatisfactory grade point average, but has excelled in other areas, acceptance may be considered on a probationary basis.  In this case, a minimum of 9 hours of graduate coursework must be completed the first term with a minimum grade point average of 3.00 for admission to the program.

Please note that applicants to the PhD program normally should have completed a thesis-based master’s degree before beginning the doctoral program. Students must be accepted by a major professor (graduate faculty member) before being admitted.  A list of our graduate research faculty along with their research interests and contact information can be found at online.  Please contact us should you have any questions pertaining to the selection of a graduate mentor.
