Department Scholarships and Awards

Nearly $500,000 in scholarships was awarded to at least 260 students majoring in Animal Sciences at UT in 2011!
Abundant scholarship opportunities are a plus in these challenging economic times when every little penny counts.  Our scholarships are awarded on many different criteria prioritized by our donors – including grades, participation in clubs & activities, leadership, and certain focus areas such as beef and dairy!  Read on for more details regarding scholarships and awards offered through Animal Science. 

Scholarships

“Prof” Duncan Angus Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student(s) with marked interest, ability and sound practical knowledge of livestock production.  Participation in livestock events, financial need and academic ability are also considered when awarding this scholarship.  Must be Tennessee born and raised with at least 50% of credit hours completed at the end of the spring semester.

Animal Science Faculty Scholarship
This scholarship goes to a sophomore, junior, or senior student majoring in Animal Science whose primary interest is in beef cattle and is active within the department.  The student’s character, determination, and financial need are also considered.

Bruce C. and Cleo G. Cox Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student(s) majoring in Animal Science with a demonstrated history of cattle production and enrolled in a course of study directly related to this focus area.  Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible.

Kenneth E. and Christine M. Edds Scholarship
This scholarship is presented to incoming or currently enrolled students in the Animal Science department.  Scholarships are awarded based on academic performance and can be awarded in multiple years. 

Henry L. Ford Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a student in the Animal Science department.  Primary consideration is given to financial need, academic performance, leadership abilities and a demonstrated desire for a college education expressed by a willingness to work to achieve this objective.  Awardee must be a Tennessee resident, preferably from East Tennessee.    

Laurence Gardiner Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students in the Animal Science department who have been actively involved in 4-H Clubs or FFA. Recipients must be Tennessee residents who are interested in dairy cattle and are selected on the basis of character, scholarship, and financial need.

James T. Granberry Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to deserving students in the Animal Science department with a major interest in dairy cattle or dairy products.

Dr. and Mrs. Charles S. Hobbs Scholarship
This award was established by the family of Dr. C.S. Hobbs, who was the Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry for 25 years. The recipient should be a junior or senior with good academic performance (3.0 or better), a strong interest in livestock, active in livestock organizations, and demonstrated leadership as evidenced by elected offices in undergraduate organizations.

Dr. R.L and Alice K. Murphree Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to a female non-traditional student in the Animal Science department who preferably demonstrates financial need.

Beville Hal Reagan Scholarship in Animal Science
This is a four-year scholarship awarded to an incoming freshman majoring in Animal Science who was active in 4-H and/or FFA during high school.  To apply, a letter of recommendation must be submitted from the 4H Club or FFA advisor to the current Animal Science scholarship coordinator.  To maintain this scholarship, the recipient must also be active in at least one student organization within the Animal Science department, while maintaining high academic standing.  Preference is given to Tennessee residents.

Beverly Shrode Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in memory of Beverly Shrode, a daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert R. Shrode.  The student must be a female enrolled in the Animal Science department and is evaluated on the basis of character, financial need, and scholarship.

Charles S. Simms Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to freshmen and upperclassmen majoring in Animal Science who participate in departmental clubs and activities, have good academic performance, and demonstrate financial need. 

Dr. John D. Smalling Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student in the Animal Science department on the basis of their character and academic performance.
  
Glenn G. Summers Scholarship
Scholarship is awarded to deserving students in the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Preference will be given to students studying in the Animal Science department with an interest in dairy cattle. Primary consideration shall be given to financial need, leadership qualities, and character.

Clyde and Laura Taylor Agriculture Scholarship
This scholarship is available to students who are currently enrolled or have been admitted to The University of Tennessee, Knoxville College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, with preference given to Animal Science majors.  The student(s) awarded this Scholarship shall have demonstrated successful academic performance, ability, attitude and willingness to work.  Awardees can receive this scholarship in multiple years. 

Tom and Patti Wade Scholarship
Scholarship is awarded to undergraduate or graduate students in the Animal Science department who has demonstrated determination to secure a college education through hard work, unending patience and willingness to conform to the stated rules and regulation for student conduct.  Successful academic performance and financial need are also considered.  Preference is given to those students from Obion, Gibson, Weakly, and Henry counties in Tennessee, as well as prior awardees.

Awards

M. Jacob Award
The Madden family, to honor Dr. Jacobs, who was both Head of the Department of Animal Science and later Dean of the College of Agriculture, originally sponsored this award.  This award is given to a student who displays overall animal production ability and scholarship.

John Smith Block & Bridle Leadership Award
This award is given to a member of Block and Bridle who has exhibited strong leadership in the club as well as in other campus activities.

Dee W. Coley Memorial Stockman’s Award
This award was made in memory of Mr. Dee W. Coley, a master stockman and breeder of Hereford cattle. The Coley Hereford Farm at Lafayette, Tennessee has been a mark of excellence throughout the nation’s beef industry for many years.  Mr. Coley was a dedicated leader in the community, tireless in his efforts to build a more profitable livestock industry, and an inspiration to all who had the opportunity to work and be associated with him.  This award is given to a senior Block and Bridle Club member who is active in Block and Bridle Club activities, takes an active interest in the affairs and activities of the Animal Science Department, and has participated on Meats and/or Livestock Evaluation and Judging Teams.
