Volunteer Leaders Finish Training with New Ideas

Training CoordinatorsTwo brand new 4-H Horse & Livestock Program Volunteer Leader Training events were offered this winter. The Western Region event took place on January 15th in Jackson, TN. The Central Region event was held February 4th and 5th in Murfreesboro, TN. Extension Specialists and staff provided training in risk management, safety, volunteer recruitment, and many more topics.

Twenty-six Extension Agents and thirty-one volunteers leaders participated in the two training events. The participants came armed with both enthusiasm for and questions about improving their County 4-H livestock programs. These questions sparked lively discussions among Extension Agents, volunteers, and program facilitators about teaching methods, 4-H events, and educational resources.

Participant evaluations reveal that both Agents and volunteers found the training offered to be interesting, useful, and relevant to their various County programs. All participants received a 4-H Horse & Livestock Program Volunteer Leader Handbook, which contains a compilation of the various 4-H livestock program rules, requirements, and calendars for 2011. A third training event is tentatively scheduled to take place in the Eastern Region in the fall of 2011.
