Philosophy of Judging

Livestock judging teaches you the principles and methods of evaluating live animals. You will learn to judge animals by comparing them to the ideal of that species. Of course there is no actual 'ideal' or 'perfect' animal. You must look at the differences among the animals and select the one animal that can best do its job or 'function.' You will learn more about this ideal animal in its function in the following modules.

Livestock judging is used daily by all livestock producers in selecting heard sires, selecting replacement females, designing a breeding program and determining when livestock are ready for market. It's impossible to be a good livestock producer witout first being a good livestock judge.
