4-H Horse Judging

Objectives

The 4-H Horse Program encourages 4-H members to: Develop leadership, initiative, self-reliance, sportsmanship and other desirable character traits. Increase knowledge of all aspects of horse science and horsemanship. Learn skills of horsemanship and an understanding of the business and career opportunities of breeding, raising, training, showing and judging horses. Develop skills to properly evaluate conformational and performance traits of horses. Experience the pride of owning (if possible) a horse or pony and being responsible for its care. Develop an appreciation of horses and horseback riding, which is a healthy form of recreation. Promote a great love for animals and a humane attitude toward them. Be better prepared for citizenship responsibilities through working in groups and supporting community services and horse activities.

Purpose

  1. Improve your knowledge of conformation and performance traits of various breeds of horses
  2. Improve your reasoning and decision making ability
  3. Improve your speaking skills by orally defending your placings
  4. Able to participate in a competitive team event
