4-H Horse Project Horse Bowl & Hippology Contest

NEW! Please indicate the team’s coach and adult volunteer in SUPER (please make sure the volunteer’s contact information is included so they can be assigned an appropriate role ahead of time). The registration deadline is February 1, 2010.

The top 4 teams of each division (Jr, Jr High and Sr High) from the Regional Horse Bowl and Hippology contests are eligible to compete at the State contests

Check-in for both the hippology contest and horse bowl will be at 8:00 - 8:45 AM with the hippology contest starting promptly at 9:00 AM. The hippology contest will be concluded on or before 11:00 AM. The horse bowl contest will start promptly after the hippology contest and will conclude when all rounds are completed. All Divisions will run at the same time in different rooms.

2010: All questions for the Horse Bowl Contests (Region and State) will come from the HORSE INDUSTRY HANDBOOK: A GUIDE TO EQUINE CARE AND MANAGEMENT plus the 1999 and 2003 HIH Updates. The HIH is the ONLY source for questions.

The proposed reference list for 2011 will be:

  • Horse Industry Handbook: A Guide to Equine Care and Management (AYHC), along with 1999 AND 2003 Horse Industry Handbook Updates (AYHC)
  • The Horse: 2nd Edition (Evans et. al)
  • Feeding and Care of the Horse: 2nd Edition (Lewis)
  • Equine Science: Basic Knowledge for Horse People of All Ages (Griffiths)
  • Nutrient Requirements of Horses (2007; NRC)

While not an official reference, http://www.extension.org/horses is an excellent educational tool for youth and adult education, with many articles and learning lessons available, and is free for Extension employees and the public. REMINDER

Horse Bowl: Junior, Junior High and Senior contests will contain ONE-ON-ONE questions.

Hippology: The section added for SENIORS will be continued at the state contest only. It is called TEAM STATIONS and will allow teams to work as a group to answer a series of questions. Teams will rotate on a timed-basis between stations.
