Dr. Richard Heitmann
Professor, Undergraduate Program Coordinator
Education
Ph.D., Animal Science (Ruminant Nutrition), University of Maine, 1973
B.S., Animal Science, University of Maine, 1967
Professional Interest: Dairy Nutrition
Because of Dr. Heitmann's administrative appointment as undergraduate coordinator in the Department of Animal Science he no longer serves as graduate mentor (i.e., major professor) for incoming students. However, his research expertise in dairy nutrition encompassing intermediary metabolism of amino acids, glucose and alternate energy fuels (FFA, VFA, ketones) in the liver, portal-drained viscera, total splanchnic and peripheral tissues, make him an ideal person for graduate committee service. Dr. Heitmann routinely used chronic, indwelling catheters in the appropriate veins and arteries to isolate the tissue in situ in his research studies.
