Professional Interest

My extension educational programs are primarily in the area of beef cattle management and more specifically in cow-calf production and marketing. I have been active in junior beef programs for more than 25 years.

James B. Neel is an Extension Beef Cattle Specialist for the Department of Animal Science, University of Tennessee. He earned a Bachelor's degree from Middle Tennessee State University, a Master's and PhD from the University of Tennessee. His graduate training was in cow-calf nutrition and management with a minor in Agricultural Economic and Extension education.

Dr. Neel has been an Extension Beef Cattle Specialist with the University of Tennessee since 1973. He served as Section Leader for the Extension Animal Science-Beef, Sheep and Horse Section from 1983 to 2000. His primary Extension educational emphasis is on cow-calf production and marketing. He has coordinated educational efforts in feeder cattle production and marketing with emphasis on "total system management". He also gives leadership to the 4-H beef cattle education programs. He served as an Agricultural Extension Agent in Tennessee from 1966-1968.

He works closely with numerous state beef breed associations as well as the Tennessee Cattlemen's Association, the Tennessee Beef Industry Council and the Tennessee Beef Cattle Improvement Association.
