Bio
Fred Hopkins is a graduate of the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation, Fred completed an internship in Large Animal Medicine and Surgery at Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After 2 years in mixed animal veterinary practice, he entered and completed a large animal medicine residency at Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He also received a Master of Science degree in Clinical Sciences from CSU. After completion of the residency, Fred joined the faculty of Oklahoma State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine Department of Clinical Sciences, where he provided contract herd health services for local dairies. Fred is a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists. In 1979, he joined the faculty of the University of Tennessee’s College of Veterinary Medicine in the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences where he taught Theriogenology. Currently, he is Extension Veterinarian in the Department of Animal Science.
As Extension Veterinarian, Fred is responsible for providing animal health information to the farm animal interested public in Tennessee. He is also associated with the UT College of Veterinary Medicine’s Center for Agriculture and Food Security and Preparedness. As a part of this program, he teaches in Agricultural and Food System Vulnerability Assessment programs across the country. As a part of Office of Laboratory Care at UT, Fred is responsible for the oversight of health and wellbeing of farm animals at the UT Agricultural Experiment Station’s Research and Education Centers across the state.
