Professional Interest

Beef Quality Assurance - I have worked closely with the Tennessee Cattlemen's Association in developing a Beef Quality Assurance Program. Education efforts have been focus on care and management of the beef animal to produce a safe and wholesome food product. I assisted the Tennessee Cattlemen's Association in developing a certification program for producers where all health management and feed management practices are performed according to National BQA Standards and are documented. I plan to continue with development of educational materials to support the BQA program and work with livestock markets in developing a market for BQA Certified Cattle.

Integrated Resource Management - Develop the Beef Integrated Resource Management Calendar (PB1663) produced in cooperation with the Tennessee Livestock Network.

Beef Cattle Management - I work in all areas of beef cattle management. Producers are utilizing these records to identify low producers and select potential replacement heifers. I also work closely with Extension agents in developing educational programs tailored to meet the needs of producers in their counties.

Mineral Supplementation - Currently forage samples are being collected across the state to determine the level of selected minerals. Results of the forage survey will be used in developing mineral supplementation programs for beef herds across the state. Results will be shared with mineral suppliers to aid in adjusting levels of specific mineral in commercially available minerals.

Youth Livestock Programs - Efforts in the youth livestock projects are directed more toward education and less on showing. I work closely with the premier exhibitor program where youth are awarded for their efforts in showmanship and skillathon in addition to showing. I assist Extension agents with county programs and continue to develop educational materials for 4-H members.
